Selective licensing operates in designated parts of Newcastle, with new Byker and High Cross arrangements taking effect in October 2026.
Landlords should check the specific property address with Newcastle City Council rather than relying only on the wider area name.

Licensed landlords may need to maintain current compliance evidence including Gas Safety and satisfactory electrical inspection documentation.

Sunderland does not currently operate Selective or Additional Licensing.
Sunderland City Council instead operates its voluntary Accredited Landlord Service alongside mandatory HMO licensing where applicable.
